Landscape#2.tif

As a multidisciplinary visual artist and designer, I explore the intersections of environment, climate change, and human experience. My work weaves together art, science, and technology, employing cultural symbols to reveal the intrinsic connections between humanity and nature. By deconstructing the perceived boundaries that separate them, I seek to foster a deeper understanding of our shared existence.

The environmental movement is politically fragmented, while the disinformation machine operates with seamless efficiency—more powerful today than ever simply because that machine has a spokesperson, a symbol of disruption, indifference and greed leading the way. And despite the tireless efforts of environmental scientists and foundations dedicated to advancing science-based solutions, we find ourselves in the midst of a climate awareness crisis with the general public. As climate activists, we are losing the information battle, and without a fundamental shift in global politics and a strategic response to this disinformation, meaningful and lasting change will remain out of reach. To address this urgent challenge, our vision is to launch the Climate Sphere Project, creating a modern-day "town crier"—a compelling and unifying symbol for truth and the environment—to galvanize awareness and counteract disinformation on a global scale.

Project Summary

The Climate Sphere—is a groundbreaking sculptural series with interactive monitoring installations that track and showcase real-time global climate data, turning abstract metrics into artistic, immersive, tangible experiences. Imagine stepping into a space where climate data isn’t just something you read - it’s something you experience.  Creating a modern day “town crier” for the planet, transforming real-time climate data into an immersive artistic installation that forces the world to pay attention. Our goal is to create a network of a global symbol and catalyst for truth and action in response to the climate awareness crisis both of the crisis we face and the solutions within reach. With this proposal, our team is seeking partners to help bring the 1st sphere to life. This is an opportunity to be at the forefront of the most pressing movement of our time - to spark a global climate awakening one sphere at a time.

The Climate Sphere is a bold and innovative public art initiative that focuses on combating climate change through art, science, technology, real-time news, and storytelling. These interactive, visually striking installations serve as global “town criers” for the environment, presenting real-time global climate data in ways that resonate with diverse audiences. Positioned in museums, urban parks, and cultural landmarks worldwide, the Climate Sphere transforms complex data into engaging, immersive experiences, fostering a shared understanding of our planet’s challenges and solutions.

Anchored in science, the Climate Sphere highlights one of 5 critical climate metrics such as Air/Ocean Temperature, Biodiversity trends, Forest Fire Frequencies, and Deforestation rates. By also leveraging the power of Art & Storytelling with real-time climate news, it shifts the narrative from despair to opportunity and back, offering a universally recognizable symbol of environmental awareness. This project addresses the global awareness crisis by establishing an iconic mascot for the climate—an emblem of urgency, hope, and collective action that transcends cultural and geographic boundaries.

Long-term outcomes include an expanded network of (15) sphere installations worldwide, measurable shifts in public understanding and behavior, and enhanced support for sustainable policies. The spheres will not only inform, but also inspire action and foster cross-cultural collaborations through art, science, technology, and environmental awareness of climate change. A Climate Sphere would be located in: United Nations Sculpture Garden, NYC, the Kennedy Center Reach Gardens, Wash. DC, Central Park, NYC, Los Angeles, CA, Miami, FL, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Lima, Peru, Shanghai, China, Mexico City, Istanbul, Cairo, Abu Dhabi, New Delhi India, and Tokyo.  Ultimately, the Climate Sphere has the potential to symbolize and ignite a new era of environmental activism with the public.  Together, we can redefine climate narratives, inspire global recognition of climate solutions, and ignite a movement toward meaningful change.

The spheres serve as interactive canvases, enabling viewers to create digital graffiti over the surface via a dedicated iPhone app. As part of a connected network, each sphere allows participants in different locations to view and respond to one another’s contributions, transforming the installation into a dynamic, evolving dialogue that transcends physical boundaries.

Description:

The Climate Sphere would be described as a 3m or (10 ft) - 9m (30ft) diameter spherical LED monitor.  The sphere monitor would be programmed with a WiFi link to gather global climate data from climate.orgnoaa.gov and others by location and in real time.  In order to record locations, the sphere would have a programmed geographical map of the earth integrated into the software underneath the artistic layer.  And because of the Wi-Fi link, the sphere would be capable of giving positive as well as negative climate news wherever it may happen on the globe.

3 MODES FOR THE MONITOR

1)  Art Mode:

  • Art Mode:  In this mode, The Climate Sphere would serve as a metaphor, a live entity, creating real-time visualizations of the climate data, transforming environmental metrics into ever-evolving artistic expressions. At its core, a large, abstract flower-like form would subtly move, almost as if sensing and observing the viewer, evoking a sense of presence and awareness. The sphere’s surface patterns would display fluid, organic forms shifting harmoniously between decay and regeneration in response to fluctuations in the real-time climate conditions—a visual metaphor for the balance between positive and negative climate forces.  The sphere’s flower and surface patterns would further adapt to its specific location, incorporating artistic variations inspired by the local flora and fauna species of the region, ensuring that each installation remains uniquely attuned to its local environment.    As an example, in the presentation film, cellular animal species on the surface of the sphere, native to that region, would die and regenerate based on real-time climate variations specific to that area of the globe.

2)  News/Events Mode:

  • News & Events Mode:  The sphere would be showing real-time climate news and events of environmental change anywhere on the globe. Each sphere could illustrate a different theme or parameter, one for Temperature Variation, Deforestation, or Biodiversity Loss, along with stories of triumphs and tragedies revenant to the theme. And it would  be showcasing new climate solution technologies from private companies, educational institutions, and foundations.

3) Interactive Mode:

  • The spheres serve as interactive canvases, enabling viewers to create digital graffiti over the surface via a dedicated iPhone app. As part of a connected network, each sphere allows participants in different locations to view and respond to one another’s contributions, hopes, and fears, transforming the installation into a dynamic, evolving dialogue that transcends physical boundaries allowing for global correspondence in real-time.

This initiative resonates with five pillars:

  • Science: By utilizing cutting-edge technology and integrating real-time data visualization, the Climate Sphere illuminates critical climate metrics such as temperature changes, deforestation rates, and biodiversity trends.

  • Technology: The project fosters collaboration among scientists, engineers, policymakers, and artists to inspire collective action. Educational workshops, local community programs, and public forums could coalesce around the art installations, engaging diverse audiences in meaningful climate dialogue.

  • Art/storytelling: The Climate Sphere transforms climate data into immersive storytelling experiences, shifting the narrative from despair to possibility. Through vibrant visuals and interactive features, it aims to instill a sense of agency, optimism, and also despair in its audience. It becomes a locus for storytelling.

  • News & Documentaries: The installation would broadcast global and local news in real time. Stories of Climate triumphs and tragedies.

  • Viewer Interactive: via digital graffiti across the surface for global correspondence by the viewer.

Objectives and Impact

  • Increase Public Awareness: Transforming climate science into interactive, comprehensible experiences.

  • Inspire Global Recognition: Establishing the Climate Sphere as a universal symbol of environmental awareness and stewardship with a global network of installations.  Yet, each sphere will have artistic variation based on its location. Local flora & fauna would be used for the surface flower & patterns based on the ecosystem of the sphere’s specific location. Thus, it would convey local as well as global environmental characteristics.

  • Elevating Climate Narratives: Through its visual and interactive storytelling, the Climate Sphere highlights the opportunities inherent in addressing climate change, inspiring behavioral and policy shifts.

  • Promoting New Science-Based Solution Technologies : The installation’s interactive design educates the public about actionable climate solutions, emphasizing their feasibility and impact.

  • Foster Local Community Engagement: Hosting educational programs and workshops that empower local actions.

  • Engaging Key Stakeholders: By integrating art, technology and data, the project creates a compelling entry point for philanthropists, policymakers, and business leaders to champion climate action.

Potential Collaboration Opportunities

  • Potential collaborations include co-developing content for the Climate Sphere, designing educational programs.  Climate Museums worldwide, + The Drawdown Foundation has expressed interest in a potential collaboration with climate news & data collection.

  • Business Models: Revenue streams showcasing green technologies w/ branded partnerships with private companies.
